I just wrapped a several month long project with Asylum doing sky mattes for Benjamin Buttons. I really hope to work on a David Fincher production again. His attention to detail, and knowledge of film is unsurpassed.

I was fortunate enough to be able to help by doing mattes for an alley extension on this Underarmor Superbowl commercial.

I can often spot myself doing the visual equivalent of iambic pentameter while designing environments. It's not hard to think of design at a rhythmic and visual representation of music.

I found one of my earlier projects on youtube. I was responsible for concepting the rollercoaster village. One of my very first contracts was working on the Superman ride at 6-Flags Magic Mountain, so it was fun to design for 6-Flags again.

'How to book a concept artist.'

Some boil down bookings into terms like 'pen? or pencil?'. Some fly by the seat of their pants and hope for the best. Some over book and hope to make it up by throwing more time into the problem.

Either way, there will be a job that you missed because a client said they had something for you and through some unfortunate turn of events the job fell through. There are options.

First, I suggest artists adopt the 'hold' system for accepting potential clients. Here is part of a discussion found at Mograph.net.

______________________

Holds
If requesting my services for specific dates you can request to have dates set aside or put "On-Hold". Alternatively, you can simply Book (aka "Firm" or "Buy") the dates to assure the service/dates are reserved with no challenge.

First Holds
A ‘First Hold’ is considered a tentative booking. A tentative booking will be put on first hold at your request. When you’ve decided to confirm or release your date(s) please contact me immediately.

Second Holds
If there is a first hold and you are interested in those dates you can place a second hold. If first hold cancels I’ll contact you and offer you the date(s), which must be confirmed or released.

Challenge to the Hold (Buying Out)
If you want to Book/buy date(s) that another Client has on a First Hold, you can "Challenge" that First Hold Client upon confirmation that you will Book the date(s) immediately if the first hold releases the date(s). The First-Hold Client now has the option to either Book or Release the First-Hold. I will make every effort to contact the First-Hold Client regarding the dates challenged by 2nd Client seeking to Buy Time. However, if there is no response by First-Hold Client after XX hours of my initial attempt of contact, I can sell any dates they have on On Hold.

Confirmed Booking (Bought Time)
Booked Time may not be Re-scheduled without penalty fee. The fee varies depending on project and should be agreed to in advance.

Cancellations (Un-scheduled Down Time, Kill Fee, Pay or Play)
Booked Time that is cancelled is subject to cancel/kill fee. The cancel fee varies depending on project.

I will be adopting these terms for my own bookings. There are also web tools for the freelancer. Freshbooks seems to be one that people have used. I cannot vouch for them, but I would consider a tool like this for my own company.

'Photoshop brush lock up? PART 2'.. Wacom Bug.

Through a bit more searching, I have found an update for CS2 that is supposed to help fix freezing brushes.

My first impressions are hopeful. Time will tell.

Now you can see why I wanted to find a workaround for the scatter bug in CS. Here is one of my more recent brush creations. It's a rough emulation of one of the impressionist brushes in Painter.

I plan on using this brush for a jungle painting I am currently working on.

'Photoshop brush lock up?'

I am looking for a solution for a bug that has been killing me in in CS.. Any time I used a brush with a lot of scatter I would run the risk of locking up. I sensed that is was a memory problem. At times I would bring up my task manager to watch what was happening and I noticed that my system memory would pin.

After adjusting cashe levels, new drivers, etc. the problem still persisted.

I did a bit of searching and I found this blog post.

http://blogs.adobe.com/scottbyer/2005/11/a_good_day.html

Basically it states that there can be a memory leak with the way fonts work. This struck a chord because I often load fonts for jobs, and I knew that the problem seemed to start several months ago.

I tried turning off font preview in preferences. Apparently this is one of the sources for the memory leak. This seemed to help a little bit.

I will post further results as I experience them.
